Wash the Feet (Holy Hints)

washing feet

“If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.” (John 13: 14-15)

Feet washing in Jesus’ day was quite the task. It was not like taking a bath today. Men and women of that day walked everywhere, and they wore sandals. Into the street, people would dump human waste, farm animals would defecate, and there were dirt roads. Walking in the street was hazardous to your health! Usually, upon entering a home, you would be offered water to wash your feet; most times this task was relegated to the lowest of servants.

Being countercultural, Jesus taught that serving others was an excellent leadership equation, and He instructed his apostles to do the same.

If Jesus is calling us to servant leadership again today through His example and words, what does that look like in the work place? How are we to wash the feet of others during 8-5? What would that look like?

Here are 5 suggestions to wash the feet of others in the work place:

1. Truly listen to the people you interact with on a daily basis. On any day of the week, I could have different individuals telling me issues impacting their performance, and I need to hear what they are saying to see how I can best assist them in their need.

2. Model service in the work place. Organize once a month service activities the entire office can participate.

3. Take time with each person in the work place. Learn who they are. Be open to who they are. Allow their creativity in solving problems, but kindly coach them to their highest performance.

4. Stay true to your word. Follow through on what you promise to your staff.

5. Extend grace and mercy to your colleagues. As there are conflicts, differences of opinion, and chaos at times, forgive and ask for forgiveness. This Christian value does wonders for the soul – yours and theirs.

These are small ways to wash the feet of your colleagues. It is being Christ to others, in your everyday ways at work. What ways can you think of to be Christ to your team?

Peace of Christ to you and yours!

Mary
