It is very difficult to pick out the best pieces of Under the Mantle when you’ve practically outlined, underlined, dog-eared, and post-it noted almost every page of the book. This is one of those books that move you along on your faith journey. Written for a lay audience, Fr. Donald takes us on a Mary adventure, as he re-introduces us to Our Beautiful Mother Mary. After reading this book, I was more committed to Marian consecration in very real ways, and I had learned some Marian theology along the way. Score!

Reminding us that a relationship with Our Blessed Mother always leads us straight to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Fr. Donald at times challenges us, and at times encourages our childlike faith. One of the main topics I picked up on quickly in the book is the overarching concept of TRUST.

Here is what Fr. Donald says about trust:

“Trust requires allowing God to lead us in ways that we don’t fully understand. Trust requires the mystery of the Cross and a willingness to die in the service of God.” (Under the Mantle, pg. 215)

Fr. Donald shows us how Our Lady’s fiat was a moment of trust for all Christians to come. Fiat! Yes, Thy will be done. Yes, I am your humble handmaid. Yes, I accept a pierced heart for the salvation of the world. Yes, I will do what You ask. Oh, and btw…Do whatever He tells you! Yes, Momma.

Fr. Donald shows us how Our Blessed Mother united the suffering she experienced with that of her Son, in order to bring more souls to Heaven. Lord, thank you for this message from Fr. Donald! Our Blessed Mother teaches us to TRUST the will of God is always for the greater good. Through her virtue, we see her response to her Son and to us, as her actions lead us closer and closer to His Sacred Heart. Her gentleness is subtle, and soon we find that as we are walking the faith journey, we are right “under the mantle.”

Fr. Donald reminds us that if God allowed himself to be mothered by Mary, then we should be willing to as well. I needed this message this summer, especially at a time when I was missing my earthly momma (God rest her soul).
After reading this book, I’ve prayed more earnestly to be under the protective mantle of Our Lady, but mostly I’ve prayed to be taught virtue.

The book is busting at the seams with deep theological truths written in ways that a “freshmen” Catholic can understand. I mean, if Cajun girl from south Louisiana can understand this and deepen her faith journey, anyone can!

Go buy this book: You deserve it! Go buy this book and fall more and more into the arms of your Holy Mother.
